Our School
Lakeside Montessori School represents the highest standards Montessori education. We strive to create an environment where our children are excited to develop their interests and learn new things.
We are members of the CCMA and the CDRCP Raising the Bar Program. We also have a subsidy agreement with the Region of Peel to ensure all families have access to the highest quality education for their children.
Toddler Curriculum
The Practical Life area of the classroom helps with coordination and movement development of children by providing activities that encourage repetition. Children are encouraged to develop orderly work habits through purposeful activities that have a logical sequence of actions.
The Fine Motor Area refines the movement of the hand, the exercise and development of hand-eye coordination and refining the movement of fingers. Children are offered a number of variations for grasping objects and are encouraged through these exercises to increase their span of concentration.
The Language Area encourages the children’s development of confidence through self expression. The materials in the classroom help enrich vocabulary as well as introduce and foster a love of books and knowledge. Children learn name association, at first concretely with actual objects and later more abstractly with photos.
Art is more than expression – it is a way to form intelligence. It provides movement, control, organization, order and language development benefits. Art in the Toddler Montessori community is process oriented and does not focus on the end result.
Experiencing all of the things that nature has to offer – grass, water, mud, birds, looking at clouds, feeling rain drops on their face, watching trees sway in the wind – all of these things bring children closer to nature, the seasons and the cycle of life.
Casa Curriculum
In this area of the classroom, children perfect their coordination and become absorbed in activity. They learn to pay attention to details as they follow a regular sequence of actions and gradually lengthen their span of concentration.
Sensorial exercises encourage children to classify, distinguish, and refine their perceptions of size, shape, colour and texture. Exercises of this type help children strengthen their understanding of the environment around them and enable them to make sound physical decisions.
Dr. Montessori designed equipment to represent quantities after she observed that children who become interested in counting like to touch or move items as they count them. By using this equipment, they can demonstrate to themselves the basic operations of mathematics.
The individual presentation of language materials in a Montessori classroom allows the teacher to take advantage of each child’s greatest areas of interest. Children are introduced to reading phonetically first with sandpaper letters, then with reading cards, followed by readers.
Children gain an awareness of the world around them by exploring other countries, their customs, food, music, climate, language and animals. Children have the freedom to explore their imaginations in a variety of mediums used for expression including painting, pasting, drawing and cutting.
